Term Limits

Term Limits - End the Era of the Career Politician

Mitch McConnel has been in Congress for 37 years.  Nancy Pelosi 35 years.  Chuck Grassley 47 years.  Chuck Schumer 41 years.

For decades, these Republican and Democrat career-politicians and their lobbyist allies have manipulated and changed laws in our political system. For the politicians, the focus has been to insulate their power by minimizing competition and lining their pockets with campaign donations. For special interest groups, it’s about passing specialized legislation to maximize profit, even if it puts a boot on the throat of average Americans.

This manipulation of law has gradually changed our political system to the current version that rewards extreme rhetoric and circus behavior.

Our political system is now set up to entice fools to run for office and give them advantage, while at the same time repelling Americans who believe commonsense and civility should be guiding principles of government.

And with bad people pouring into our government, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why 3.5 million Americans over the age of 65 can’t afford their prescription drugs; or why 1 in 4 Americans with cancer can’t afford treatment; or why just last year, 2.76 million illegal migrants came through our southern border.

A system that entices and rewards bad people is a system that will render bad policy. We must change the system if we are ever to produce pragmatic solutions for the American people.

Term limits would not only help to remove feuding personalities and instill new energy into policy making, but most importantly, term limits would diminish the influence of big money in politics and diminish the time that politicians spend cultivating relationships with mega donors.

If there is a firm end to serving in government, staying in the good graces of lobbyists and special interest groups isn’t as important.

Ending the era of the career-politician is of the utmost importance.  We must have term limits.
